Poverty and social welfare: developments in recent years

This study examines the evolution of poverty and social welfare in Peru in recent years, against the backdrop of significant economic growth that has led to a 30% increase in per capita GDP since 1992. It highlights that, despite improvements in economic indicators, poverty continues to affect nearly half the population, making its reduction a key national objective. The FGT index is used to assess the severity and distribution of poverty, revealing that the income gap for the poor narrowed from 20.9% to 17.5% between 1991 and 1994. In addition, social indicators, such as infant mortality and chronic malnutrition, show significant improvements, although challenges persist, especially in rural areas. The analysis suggests that sustained economic growth, accompanied by well-designed social policies, is crucial for continuing to address poverty issues and improve the living conditions of Peruvians.
